Youth Beat is fiscally sponsored by the Oakland Public Education Fund, which means that we are eligible to receive charitable contributions under the Ed Fund’s 501c3 status.
Does the Oakland Public Education Fund provide financial support for Youth Beat?
No. We support all of our costs with our own fee-for-service contracts and donations from charitable foundations and wonderful individuals like YOU. If you would like to support our students, please click here.
Is Youth Beat part of Oakland Unified School District?
No, however we have created a strong strategic partnership with the district. OUSD provides partial funding and accreditation for our after school programs, and OUSD schools help sponsor Youth Beat programs at their school sites.
Is Youth Beat part of KDOL-TV?
No, however our partnership with KDOL leverages significant public resources for Oakland’s kids. KDOL is OUSD’s Education Access TV Station. Each year, it receives PEG Funds (Cable TV Franchise Taxes paid to the City of Oakland) to buy cameras, computers, lighting, audio systems, etc. to outfit the station and create content. Youth Beat makes the link between these community resources and Oakland’s students. Without Youth Beat’s programming and partnership with KDOL, the broadcast studio and its equipment would not be available for student media arts training.
Is Youth Beat affiliated with Laney College?
Not directly, but many of Youth Beat’s classes earn both OUSD and Laney College credit, so Youth Beat students start earning college credit even before the graduate high school.
Can my child take Youth Beat classes?
Yes! All Oakland students can participate in our after school and summer programs and receive credit for them.
Does Youth Beat currently offer programming at my child’s school as part of their regular school day?
Youth Beat currently offers media programming at the following school sites: Oakland International High School, MetWest High School, Fremont High School, Community Day School, La Escuelita K-8, and Madison Park Academy.
